Bring the Freshness of Spring Indoors, Naturally
There’s something about spring that makes me feel like emptying the entire contents of my house into a trash bin and bathing it in lemon scented cleaning supplies… just me? I didn’t think so. Humans crave fresh air and sunshine and winter deprives of us that. It’s a primal feeling. When the earth starts to produce all those sprouts of green, it’s a new beginning. Our homes deserve that too! So let’s give our homes a fresh start while respecting the earth with these five tips to spring clean!
Let the sun shine in! (aka Clean the Windows)
You can clean windows with this simple mix in your very own spray bottle:
- .5 c white vinegar
- .5 c rubbing alcohol
- 1 tbsp. cornstarch
- 10 drops lemon essential oil (to get that lemon scent we’ve been craving!)
Use it just like your regular window cleaner. For the best results, wipe it off with a microfiber cloth (eco-friendly and works great). Then, open those shiny windows up and let the fresh air in!
Get out of the vacuum.
Actually, I mean get everything out of the vacuum. Your vacuum works hard for you, but what have you done for it lately? Your vacuum is full of allergens and dust if it’s anything like mine (I’m a pet lover). Every time you use it, those particles can get pushed into your air. Take that sucker apart and clean it. If it’s bagless, wash out that canister. Take off the hoses and wash them out too. Replace the filter if you have one. Get a screw driver to unscrew the brush and pull all the hair and strings out of it. It’s way easier than you’d imagine. These things were meant to be taken apart. Put it back together once all the parts are dry and clean, and you’ve got a like new vacuum that won’t pollute your air.
Now Make Good Use of It.
In a small jar, combine:
- 1.5 c baking soda
- ¼ c salt (whatever you’ve got)
- 10-20 drops lemon essential oil (there it is again!)
Give it a sprinkle all over your carpet and leave it for 30 minutes. Then vacuum it all up. It will clean, deodorize and make your house feel clean and fresh.
Get steamy! (aka Clean the Microwave)
Every time I open that door I cringe at all that baked on crud. In lieu of running out to buy that little plastic steaming mom, try this!
- 1 c vinegar
- 1 c water
Pour it in a measuring cup. Nuke for five minutes. Wipe it with microfiber or rag. Voila! It’s like new.
Do it again for Spring showers.
Using the same recipe and cooking time, pour the mix into a spray bottle and spray it all over your shower. Wait 5 minutes, and use a microfiber cloth (shocker) to wipe it all down. Nothing more refreshing than getting clean in freshly polished shower!
Doesn’t that feel better?
Most cleaning products are filled with chemicals you probably don’t actually want in your home. They’re bad for you and bad for the environment. There are lots of household items that can clean just as well, without all the damaging impacts. Look for solutions that use lemons, vinegar, and baking soda…. there are tons more out there. Enjoy your fresh as a daisy house!
